MATCH REPORT: Latics Gain One Point From Checkatrade Trophy Clash

29 August 2017

Oldham Athletic gained one point from their Checkatrade Trophy Group D clash against Port Vale.

Latics were defeated on penalties to deny them a bonus point despite the goalless scoreline at full time.

Mason Fawns and Ollie Banks missed their spot kicks as the Sky Bet League Two side gained two points from the encounter.

Manager John Sheridan handed a debut to midfielder Jack Byrne who signed on loan from Wigan Athletic and he started the game brightly.

He looked to get on the ball at every opportunity and was a bright spark in the midfield.

Port Vale had the first opportunity of the game as Rekeil Pyke received space in the penalty box but Brian Wilson managed to block his effort.

Pyke had another chance five minutes later as he was picked out on the edge of the box but he fired wide of Ben Wilson’s post.

Latics played some neat football but were struggling to create any sort of clear cut chance.

Midway through the half, Pyke fed Dan Turner but the striker’s shot went over the crossbar.

Minutes later, Mason Fawns found himself in space in the penalty area but he could not dig the ball out and convert from close range.

The closest chance of the half came on 37 minutes as Aaron Amadi-Holloway curled over the crossbar from the edge of the box.

The striker received the ball 18 yards out but his effort was just too high to trouble the goalkeeper.

Latics started the second half brightly and should have gone ahead through Fawns.

Byrne found the youngster in space on the right, he cut inside and shot but it went wide of Ryan Boot’s goal.

The Wigan loanee was having a strong influence on the game and he was at the heart of every Oldham Athletic attack.

Port Vale almost took the lead on the hour mark as the ball was laid back to Cristian Montano in the penalty box but he fired over from close range.

Both sides struggled to test either goalkeeper as David Worrell saw a tame effort trickle wide of the far post.

Dan Gardner did force Boot into a save on 70 minutes as his 25-yard effort bounced in front of the goalkeeper before he gathered.

Byrne fired over the crossbar from 25 yards not long after before he almost gave Latics the lead on 80 minutes.

He picked up the ball on the edge of the box and aimed for the top corner but it went inches over the top.

The game went the distance and was settled via a penalty shootout in the new ABBA format.

The visitors dispatched all of their penalties, whilst Latics missed two spot kicks through Banks and Fawns which secured Port Vale the bonus point.
