MATCH PREVIEW: Oldham Athletic vs. Wigan Athlet

18 August 2017

Oldham Athletic will host Wigan Athletic at SportsDirect.com Park on Saturday, August 19, 3pm kick-off.

The two clubs have had different starts to the season, with Wigan unbeaten in all competitions and Latics yet to secure a victory.

A brace from Nick Powell helped the visitors to a 4-1 win over Bury at the DW Stadium in their last outing. That took the former Manchester United midfielder’s tally to three from the opening two matches of the league campaign.

Ryan McLaughlin opened the scoring for Oldham in last week’s clash with Walsall, but their opponents proved too strong and claimed all three points with a goal in the 90th minute.

Oldham manager John Sheridan said of the visitors: “I look at their squad and their bench and they’re very strong.”

He added: “It will be a good test for us, I’d rather be playing the likes of Wigan instead of the so-called inferior teams but they’ll come here boosted by the start they’ve had but we’re at home and I expect us to win and try and win the game.”

Sheridan’s squad has received a boost in the form of Dan Gardner, as he returns from a three match suspension. Paul Green and Ryan Flynn are also hoping to be available, after being out due to injuries.

Flynn netted in Oldham’s 2-1 victory in the first round of last year’s EFL Cup.

That result has no bearing on the Sky Bet odds for this week’s encounter though, as Wigan are favourites at 19/20, the hosts are 100/30 and the draw is 11/5.
