Jack Byrne Makes Shortlist For Checkatrade Trophy Player Of The Round

1 December 2017

Following the completion of the third round of fixtures in the group stages of the Checkatrade Trophy, the shortlist for the Player of the Round competition has been revealed with Jack Byrne making the final five.

You can vote for the Oldham midfielder at EFL.com/playeroftheround and if he takes home the trophy, you could have the honour of presenting the award and winning tickets to the Checkatrade Trophy final. *

Outstanding on the night, Byrne showcased his full range of passing and a commanding control of the midfield as Oldham swept aside Newcastle United U21 4-1. His two goals demonstrated the 21-year-old’s ability to jink past defenders, as well as his composure in front of goal.

The conclusion of the third round of fixtures saw teams book their spot in the next round of the Checkatrade Trophy and get one step closer to a showpiece Wembley final. Blackpool topped their group courtesy of an impressive 4-1 victory over Middlesbrough U21s. Boro’s North-East rivals didn’t fair any better, with Newcastle United falling to a 4-1 defeat against Oldham Athletic. However, the fixture of the round honours belong to Gillingham and Reading who played out an exhilarating 7-5 thriller, with the victory sending the Gills through to the next round.

The Checkatrade Trophy Player of the Round shortlist for the third group stage matches is as follows:

  • Jack Byrne (Oldham Athletic)
  • Jordan Graham (Fulham)
  • Caleb Richards (Blackpool)
  • Erico Sousa (Accrington Stanley)
  • Scott Wagstaff (Gillingham)

The Checkatrade Trophy Player of the Round competition gives fans the opportunity to vote for the player they feel shined in the third round of fixtures.

An independent football expert selected the five worthy players that make up the shortlist and now supporters have the chance to vote for the final two via EFL.com. The two players with the most votes will then be considered by a judging panel consisting of representatives from the EFL, before the overall winner is revealed.

Fans have until 9am on Tuesday 5th December to register their votes for the award. To vote for the player you feel deserves to be the Checkatrade Trophy Player of the Round, please visit EFL.com/playeroftheround.
