WELLENS: "We Didn't Deserve Anything"

2 December 2017

Oldham Athletic manager Richie Wellens has expressed his disappointment with his side's performance against Southend United yesterday.

A goal in both halves was enough to give the Shrimpers the win over Latics at Roots Hall.

On the game, Wellens said: “It’s very disappointing, I think on the whole we didn’t deserve anything from the game.

“We started the first 5 minutes well and Southend did’t really get out of their half and from then on I think the players thought it was going to be too easy.

“From then on, Southend put the ball in the channels, went long, won the second balls, percentage football and we just didn’t compete well enough.

“Too many times when we could have countered we ended up slowing down and letting them get back in.

“We still had four or five good chances and the penalty. Doyle hit the post and he could have scored with a header so we’ve had chances to win the game.

“It’s the first time I’ve felt we’ve not deserved anything out of the game. We just didn’t mix it up and we didn’t earn the right to play.

“I thought they did all the ugly side of the game a lot better than us.”
