Oldham Athletic manager feels a big result like Saturday’s 5-1 win over Northampton Town had been in the making for some time.
Latics were three goals up by halftime and eventually put five past the Cobblers.
On the game Wellens said: “It was a really good performance, very convincing and It’s been coming.
“I think in the first half we only had three shots on target and we scored with all three but in the last home game here we had a lot of chances and didn’t take them.
“It’s really pleasing that people get on the scoresheet, get confidence.
“I thought Jack Byrne was outstanding, Tope was outstanding.
“Craig Davies came on and he got a goal and he needed that, hopefully he’ll be full of confidence now.
“Every time we got in the final third today we moved the ball quick, we looked really positive, we looked like scoring every time we were in and around their box.
“That victory was for the people that were on the pitch in the morning, that is what real football is all about.
“I got there early and looked at our pitch covered in snow, I went into the office and saw West Ham are playing Chelsea on this beautiful pristine pitch and it’s just a different world.
“Our game was on because 30/40 volunteers, including staff of the club in suits, were sweeping the snow off.
“At one time it was looking doubtful but I’m really proud of everyone and that what football is all about when people pull together.”
