MATCH REPORT: Latics Suffer Defeat On The Road

23 December 2017

Oldham Athletic suffered a heavy defeat on the road as they were beaten by Plymouth Argyle.

It was a nightmare start to the game for Latics who fell two goals behind in the opening six minutes of the game.

Toumani Diagouraga and Graham Carey put the Pilgrims ahead before Anthony Gerrard pulled a goal back before the hour mark.

However, a minute after getting back into the game, Plymouth restored their two goal advantage as Ryan Edwards headed in from inside the penalty area.

Jake Jervis rounded off the scoring in a game to forget for Latics.

Manager Richie Wellens made a number of changes to the side which drew 1-1 with Doncaster Rovers last weekend.

Notable absentees included Eoin Doyle and Kean Bryan who missed the game through illness.

It was a disastrous start to the game for Latics as they were two goals behind in the first six minutes of the game.

Plymouth Argyle broke from a corner and the ball fell to Ryan Taylor on the edge of the box, he found Diagouraga through on goal and he took it around Johny Placide to put the home side ahead.

One soon became two as Carey latched on to a long through ball and lobbed the goalkeeper to extend the Pilgrims lead.

Latics were shellshocked but responded well as they forced a number of corners, however, chances were limited.

Craig Davies forced a save from Kelle Roos on 11 minutes but it was the home side who almost extended their lead on 16 minutes.

Carey managed to get beyond Anthony Gerrard, fired across the face of goal but Ryan McLaughlin managed to hack the ball off the line when a goal looked likely.

Midway through the half, Gevaro Nepomuceno saw an effort deflected whilst at the other end, Carey’s effort from 25 yards was blocked by Brian Wilson.

Athletic were limited to shots from outside the penalty area with Ryan Flynn firing wide on 26 minutes.

Two chances for the home followed as David Fox’s effort was blocked by Dan Gardner, whilst Sonny Bradley headed over the crossbar from inside the penalty area.

Bookings followed for Jack Byrne and Wilson as Latics grew more and more frustrated.

Athletic had the finally chance of the half as a cross into the box was towards Davies but he could not connect properly and the ball went wide.

Wellens made a double change at the break and brought on Aaron Holloway and Rob Hunt.

Latics did start the second half positively as they retained possession well and looked threatening.

Their first opportunity of the half saw Nepomuceno find Holloway on the edge at the back post but his header was blocked in front of goal.

Latics did well in the aerial battle and managed to pull a goal back on 57 minutes.

Byrne’s corner found the onrushing Gerrard who thundered his header past Kelle Roos to reduce the arrears.

However, Plymouth managed to regain their two goal advantage only two minutes later.

Carey’s free kick from 35 yards found the head of Edwards in the centre and he headed beyond Placide to net the Pilgrims third.

Latics did continue to create chances as Hunt fired across the centre but could not pick out a man whilst seconds later came Latics’ best chance to get back into the game.

Holloway beat the offside trap, laid the ball back to Davies who only had the goalkeeper to beat but Roos was out quickly to make a superb save to deny the striker.

Latics would rue that missed opportunity as Plymouth scored their fourth goal of the game on 72 minutes.

Jervis, who had only been on the pitch for a minute, latched on to a long ball and managed to fire past Placide to put the game beyond doubt.

Athletic continued to fight until the end. Byrne forced a smart save from Roos whilst substitute Tope Obadeyi headed into the side netting.

That was the best it got for Latics who came away from Home Park pointless.
