McLaughlin: “We Have The Belief With Us.”

12 February 2017

Ryan McLaughlin was delighted to see his side move out of the Sky Bet League One relegation places with victory over Coventry City.

The former Liverpool man netted his second for the club and Athletic’s third of the afternoon to seal the win which took them away from the drop zone.

Speaking after the game, McLaughlin said: "It was a difficult game on a tough pitch. With Coventry being down at the bottom as well, we felt it was a six pointer.

"That brings a lot of pressure but in the second half I thought we were a lot better. We dealt with everything well and I thought we deserved the three points.”

The 22-year-old knows it is about continuing the good form shown in recent week to sustain being out of the bottom four.

“We have the belief with us,” he admitted. “Bury had a good win so we know it’s going to be difficult.

“We have Swindon Town away next Saturday so we know it’s going to be difficult but we have the confidence and belief to do well and get out of there so hopefully we can.

“We have the ability and experience to get us out of the relegation places as well.”

Latics’ third goal was a superb individual move from McLaughlin: “I always back myself when I’m running at a defender one v one,” he said, speaking about his goal.

"Anytime I can get the ball, turn and run at them then I feel confident and comfortable. Everything seemed to just open up in front of me and I didn’t really think about it.

I just hit it in the bottom corner and thankfully it went in. I haven’t scored many yet to be fair, it’s only the start of my career but I want to get as many as I can.

I should have scored against Bradford, and against Chesterfield so I was disappointed but I was glad to get one this afternoon.

“It gave us a bit of breathing space and I want to get as many as I can between now and the end of the season to keep us out of the relegation places.”
