Manager John Sheridan heaped praise on both his players and the supporters following the 0-1 win over Chesterfield yesterday.
Peter Clarke headed the only goal of the game in stoppage time at the end of the second half to give 10-man Latics, who had Anthony Gerrard sent off at half time, the three points.
Speaking after the game, Sheridan said: “I thought it was an outstanding and quality performance.
“I was comfortable with us in the first half, I thought we were dealing with everything Chesterfield were throwing at us, and they are a good footballing side but I thought the shape of our side was really good.
“When you get a man sent off with 45 minutes to go, sometimes you fear the worst but they didn’t half stick to the game plan and every single one of them, even the subs that came on, put a shift in.
"I could see us keeping a clean sheet because we dealt with everything they were throwing at us. I’m proud of my players with the way they went about the game.
"Clarkey was probably the only person who would have scored that goal as well. You could see him going with that determination to score and it’s a great ball from Aiden O’Neill and we get the goal.
"It was a man like performance and everyone put a right shift in. It’s a massive three points, sometimes it’s not how you play but what you come out with and three points is a massive plus for us.”
The gaffer reserved special praise for the supporters who made a lot of noise during the game.
“I tell you what, the supporters were unbelievable, especially in the second half,” Sheridan admitted.
“I thought there were about 6,000 of them here today and I thought they were brilliant.
“They drove us on even when we were under the cosh and they were cheering non-stop and we got the opportunity.
“We’ve not won many games, they are chuffed to bits and they have seen the character of the team.
“The fans did it for me last year and they did it for the team and we are going to need them for the rest of the season.
“They were magnificent and I’m chuffed to bits for them."
