Latics Are The Second Biggest Giant Killer In The FA Cup’s Recent History

5 January 2017

Oldham Athletic are of course well known for their FA Cup exploits.

A recent study by The Giant Killers: A Search for the FA Cup’s Ultimate Underdog, has found that the club are actually the second biggest giant killer of the last 25 years.

The study analysed two-and-a-half decades worth of results from the Third Round onwards and found that the Latics had beaten teams a total of 213 places above them.

Their biggest victory came against Liverpool in 2013, a staggering 56 places ahead of them in the football pyramid, while they’ve also famously beaten Manchester City and Everton over the years.

Naturally, their exploits against the Reds is their most famous over recent years in a dramatic tie where Matt Smith’s first half double helped beat a Premier League side that included Luis Suarez, Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson.

However, less than a decade earlier the club were also hitting the headlines, beating local rivals Manchester City 1-0 during an unforgettable day at Boundary Park.

They were pipped to the top spot by Luton Town who have beaten teams a massive 233 places above them in recent times, including a 1-0 win over Premier League Norwich, at the time 88 places above them - the largest individual giant kill over the same period.

Oldham took second place, joint with Swansea City having accumulated 213 “giant killing points”, with Sheffield United (203) and Cardiff City (195) completing the top five.
