Clarke Confident Ahead Of Walsall Clash

3 March 2017

Captain Peter Clarke admitted his side fear no teams in Sky Bet League One as Athletic travel to Walsall tomorrow afternoon.

The Saddlers sit 13th in Sky Bet League One but Latics have gone five games unbeaten so Clarke expects his side to take the game to their opposition.

He said: “They are a good side, they like to get it down and pass it and they have some good individual players.

"We will go there confident and we will know what our game plan is. We will know what we will do, how we are going to combat their strengths and hopefully expose their weaknesses.

"The players are very confident against any teams that we play. We will go there and be ready to take the three points.”

The skipper has been part of a defence which has kept four clean sheets in the month of February.

“There is a real clean sheet mentality through the course of the back four and the whole team in general to be honest with you,” he commented.

“Rippers has stated that he would like the record and he is not too far away from that.

“As a defender, you pride yourself on limiting opposition chances and keeping the clean sheets as well.”

Clean sheets aren’t just down to the captain, however, and he was quick to praise his defensive partners.

"I’ve played alongside both Brian Wilson and Anthony Gerrard throughout the course of the season. They are both experienced, know their job and know what is required,” he said. “They are both winners and they are good characters.

"I think Rob Hunt has been excellent. He is a relatively quiet lad but he comes out with one or two funny moments, not sure he means to but he is, but he is a cracking lad.

“He has come in and gone about his business really well and I think it’s testament to how well he’s done that not a lot has been said.

“Generally when a defender comes in, he gets noticed perhaps for making mistakes and that has not happened with Rob.

“He has been excellent and he can very pleased with his performances since he came."
