Clarke Aiming High Next Season

5 May 2017

Captain Peter Clarke believes reaching the play off places next season is a realistic aim for his side.

The skipper picked up three awards at the End of Season awards dinner, including the two big awards of the night, the Player’s Player of the Season and Oldham Athletic Player of the Season.

Speaking at the End of Season award event, Clarke believes only part one of the job is complete and part two is about securing a way out of this division and into the Championship.

Clarke said: “I spoke to the manager when he came in January and in February and he outlined what he was hoping to do.

"The first part was securing our position in this league and we have done that. Doing it with a game to spare from when he arrived was testament to the dressing room, manager and his staff.

"That was part one of the job and the second part can now start. The manager will spend the summer retaining players, recruiting players and also plan for pre-season when we arrive back.

“He can put his ideas and messages across to players in pre-season and then ultimately that will get us ready for the start of the season in August.

“I really believe is in a good place and we are in a place we can build and progress.

“It’s going to take a lot of hard work so the work we have done since January, we need to that all over again and a little bit more if we want to be successful.”

The Player’s Player of the Season award is a special one to win for Clarke as he explains: “When you win an award voted for by your teammates and the lads you share a dressing room with then it’s special.

“The fact they think my performances have warranted it is nice and I’m very grateful.

“Throughout the course of the season I’ve probably had cross words with a few and that is only because I demand the best from them.

“The fact that they have voted for me, I’m very humbled and grateful."

One man who Clarke has to say goodbye to is goalkeeper Connor Ripley.

“He’s been absolutely fantastic throughout the course of this season for us,” he said.

"I love him to bits and I think he is a fantastic goalkeeper. He is an even better person and will be a lifelong friend.

“I’m hopeful we can have him back but realistically this is a player that has got all the attributes to go a long way in the game.

"That could be to the very top and I’ll be hoping, wishing and praying that is the case. If he does that, then I will be very pleased for him.”
