On this day in 1994, legendary striker Roger Palmer was released by the football club and subsequently retired from the game.
After 13-and-a-half years, Palmer called time on his playing career as he broke the all-time goalscoring record for the club.
He ended up with a total of 159 goals in more than 500 appearances for Latics, a record which still stands today.
At the time of his release, Palmer said: "It will be strange not coming in after so many years. It makes you feel as though you are getting divorced."
Jimmy Frizzell, who signed Palmer in 1980, also added: "It has given me great pleasure to see Roger do so well."
