Oldham Athletic exited the FA Youth Cup at the first round stage following a 0-3 home defeat against Bury.
Two first half goals from Callum Hulme and Cameron Hill, and a second half strike from Tom Harker ensured the visitors passage through to the second round of the competition.
Tony Philliskirk’s men started the game strongly as they forced a number of efforts in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Firstly, Chinedu Uche’s inswinging corner found captain Tom Hamer but he headed wide of the goal.
Not long after, Ryan Scholes-Beard fired a low ball into the box which Max Norman latched on to but he could not get his shot away cleanly.
Norman almost turned provider minutes later as he attempted to pick out the onrushing Uche but his through ball was blocked.
Bury had the ball in the back of the net on 15 minutes but the referee pulled play back for a foul on goalkeeper Joe Boyling.
Rob Harker fired over the crossbar from a free kick from 20 yards soon after but midway through the half, Scholes-Beard went close for Latics.
He picked up a loose ball, drove at the back four, but his shot from 25 yards was blocked by Saul Shotton.
The visitors took the lead on 25 minutes through a free kick from Hulme.
Javid Swarby-Neavin picked up a booking for a clumsy challenge on the edge of the box and Hulme curled the ball into the top corner to give Bury the lead.
One soon became two as the visitors extended their lead through Hill.
Hill was allowed freedom on the edge of the box and fired into the bottom corner to extend Bury’s lead.
That knocked the stuffing out the young Latics who had started the game brightly, however, they almost pulled one back on the half hour mark.
The ball broke for Ned Dry inside the penalty area, he shot but Bury goalkeeper Scott Moloney saved with his legs.
The young Latics struggled to hold on to the ball as Bury took control of the game and almost forced a third.
Wealth Da-Silva skipped past two defenders and played the ball across but Tommy Lent was back to clear the ball away.
With the words of Philliskirk ringing in their ears, Latics created an early opening in the second half.
Scholes-Beard found Norman who raced through on goal but the goalkeeper stood up to the test and palmed wide.
On 51 minutes, Bury made it three as Harker met a corner into the box and volleyed home at the front post.
Latics did keep their heads up and continued to search for a way back into the game.
Uche fired over from inside the penalty area whilst Scholes-Beard also fired over from close range following a Jay Sheridan cut back.
Bury continued to control large parts of the second half as Latics struggled to create a clear cut opening.
Sheridan almost pulled a goal back with five minutes of the game remaining as he met substitute Bailey Whalley’s cross into the box but his sweetly-struck volley was well saved by the goalkeeper.
