Youth Team Record Back To Back Wins

2 October 2017

Oldham Athletic’s Youth Team made it back to back wins on Saturday after a 3-2 victory over Hartlepool United u18s.

Head of Academy Coaching, Simon Cooper took the team along side Lead Youth Development Phase Coach Pete Wild whilst Tony Philliskirk has been helping out the first team.

On Saturday’s win over Hartlepool u18s in the EFL Youth Alliance, Cooper said: “We started off poorly and weren’t on our game, we’ll have to get deeper into the analysis on why we’re starting poorly. Maybe it’s a mental thing with a couple of players.

“We grew into the game but I think sometimes we made hard work of easy tasks, we made a couple of mistakes and they got in behind us and we conceded early.

“Myself and Pete Wild didn’t panic, we relaxed and grew into the game, got better and changed a few things on the corners.

“Tom Hamer got up and headed a great corner across and Max Norman got on the end of it and from there we really put our stamp on the game.

“They were good, their rotation caused us a few problems early on but I felt we played quite well and were comfortable in possession and were unlucky to not have a few more goals.

“It’s the first time this season we’ve scored three goals and that’s the target, we really need to start taking our chances, we’ve been doing a lot of that in training.

“It’s not just about the finishing, it’s about taking opportunities of creating space so you get one time finishes and also winning set pieces.

“The lads are in a good place at the minute and they’re learning and building.”

Next up the young Latics host Chesterfield U18s in the EFL Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday, October 7, 12:00pm kick off.
