Oldham Athletic interim manager Richie Wellens was please with his side’s performance against Crewe Alexandra in the Checkatrade Trophy.
Latics ran out 1-0 winners at Gresty Road, making it three wins in three since Wellens took over as interim.
Jack Byrne scored the only goal of the game in the first half but Latics had a number of chances at goal and had good spells of possession.
On the game, Wellens said: “I though for parts of first half we were by far the better team, I thought in parts we should have really put them to the sword, we had loads of chances and all the ball.
“I said to them at half time: ‘I’ve been in games like this where you’ve been to Portsmouth and you come tonight and there’s no one here and you’re totally dominating the game but they are difficult’.
“I understand towards the end we were a bit sloppy but I wanted them to be ruthless and I wanted them to go on and win by more goals but it’s another win.
“I was pleased in the first ten minutes, we passed them off the park but played everything in front of them, it was comfortable for them.
“We asked them to play it down the sides a bit more and once we played it down the sides their centre-backs were running towards their own goal and the space between their defence and midfield got bigger so we could get our ball players on the ball.”
Since coming in as interim manager, Wellens has guided the team to three wins in three against Peterborough United, Portsmouth and Crewe Alexandra.
On his position, he said: “I’ve done everything that I possibly can and I’d like to think that in everything I’ve done I’ve been as professional as I possibly can be.
“I think I’ve got the team playing in a way that’s good to watch, I think the fans at times would have enjoyed that game.
“It’s all I can do, I can’t make the decision for other people, I hope that I get the job and I hope that I’m still involved at the club if a new manager does come in.
“Whatever it may be, I just need to do the best for the football club.”
