Byrne Enjoying Life Under Wellens

5 October 2017

On loan midfielder Jack Byrne is enjoying working with interim manager Richie Wellens.

The Irishman who joined on loan from Wigan Athletic on transfer deadline day, has started nine games for the club and has scored three goals, two of which are shortlisted for September's goal of the month.

Since Wellens took over as interim manager, Byrne has played a key role in the team, helping the side to three wins on the bounce.

On working with Wellens, Byrne said: “We’re playing some good football now under Richie, everyone’s enjoying being out on the pitch.

“We’re getting the results to show for that, everyone’s buzzing at the moment and hopefully we can continue.

“We’re playing a lot more football, a lot more freely. He’s found a way of winning and that’s the main thing.

“Richie has come in and he’s done unbelievable. All the boys are right behind him.

“I think he’s tried to get the best out of me and the team and to a certain extent it's worked and we’ve been winning games.

“Everyone’s happy when we are winning games. If he had have come in and hadn’t have won or played good football, people would have said we were too open or whatever but we're winning and playing good football so we don’t want to change too much at the moment.

“I’m just delighted to be back on the pitch and I’m delighted the club gave me the opportunity to get back on the pitch.

“The boys are all great and the staff are unbelievable so, so far so good, hopefully I can stay for a bit longer.

“We didn’t have a great start but we’re starting to turn it around a little bit now and we can just keep going bit by bit.

“Richie has been in ten days and there’s six, seven months left of the season if not more, so hopefully we’ll see how far we can go.”

Next up Latics take on one of Byrne’s previous clubs, Blackburn Rovers at SportsDirect.com Park on Saturday, October 14, 3pm kick off.

Tickets will not be available to buy on the day and the club are encouraging supporters to get them as soon as possible to avoid missing the deadline (Friday, October 14).
