Philliskirk Rues Youth Team's Missed Chances

18 September 2017

Academy manager Tony Philliskirk is disappointed with the amount of chances his youth team missed during Saturday's defeat against Tranmere Rovers U18s.

The young blues were beat 1-0 away from home in the EFL Youth Alliance Cup.

Philliskirk said: "We totally dominated the game, Joe Boyling made one good save in the first half but we totally dominated possession and chances.

"We just really lacked that cutting edge and we fell for the sucker punch.

"We got raided down our left, we should have defended it better but the ball was cut back and the lad smashed it home from 10 yards with about 10 minutes to go.

"Then we had another two or three unbelievable chances but it was one of those days, if we were still playing now we probably wouldn’t have scored.

"The bottom line is because of that we have exited that cup competition despite having one game left in the mini league we can’t qualify, so it’s really disappointing.

"Our performance was good enough, it was just the final third and the end product that really let us down."

The youth team are next in action away against Doncaster Rovers U18s on Saturday, September 23, 11:00am kick off.
