MATCH PREVIEW: Portsmouth vs Oldham Athletic

29 September 2017

Oldham Athletic are looking to make it back to back wins for the first time this season when they travel to Portsmouth on Saturday, September 30.

Last time out, 10-man Latics battled to pick up all three points at home to high flying Peterborough United in Richie Wellens’ first game in charge as interim manager winning 3-2.

This weekend’s opposition also had a good result mid-week when they dispatched Bristol Rovers convincingly, 3-0 at Fratton Park moving them to 11th in Sky Bet League One.

It’s been four years since the two sides have met and during the 2012/13 season, Oldham came out on top, winning 1-0 on both occasions.

The day is set to be a special one for Pompey defender Christian Burgess who will be hoping to make his 100th appearance for the club since joining from Peterborough in 2015.

But the centre-back will have a tough job on his hands if he features coming up against Craig Davies who has scored 5 goals in 6 games.

In Richie Wellens’ pre-match press conference he revealed Eoin Doyle, who scored two and set up one mid-week, will miss the game with an injury, describing it as a “blow.”

“It is lucky that I’ve got Holloway back so that will be a straight swap. I will see what their back line is like and I will see what formation they play and make decisions from that.” Wellens said.

“I’m just gutted that Doyle’s not fit because his energy and finishing is outstanding. He felt something in the last five minutes of the game, and I had already made three substitutions but I couldn’t pull him off.”

Match Odds

Sky Bet have placed Oldham Athletic as 5-1 outsiders to pick up all three points at Fratton Park, whilst the home side are 8/15 to win and the draw is 16/5.
