Oldham Athletic are back in action at Boundary Park for the second time in a week as Richie Wellens’ side face Gillingham tomorrow afternoon (3pm kick off).
Both sides come into the game on the back of draws in their midweek fixtures.
Latics equalised on the stroke of half-time through a well placed Duckens Nazon strike to earn a much needed point against Walsall whilst Steve Lovell’s side travel north having battled to a 0-0 draw against promotion hopefuls Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night.
The Kent club have endured a poor run of results in recent weeks having taken just two points from a possible 15 over the last five games.
Having dominated the match on Wednesday night, Athletic could not quite find the breakthrough as Saddlers goalkeeper Liam Roberts made a string of outstanding saves to keep the scores level.
The Gills might have felt they were unfortunate not to claim all three points on Tuesday as Josh Parker squandered a golden opportunity to open the scoring, overrunning the ball after going clear through on goal.
The former Oldham loanee sits second in the Gills goalscoring charts with 10, four behind another previous Athletic forward, Tom Eaves.
In the reverse fixture, Latics were held to a goalless draw at the Priestfield Stadium with a superb clearance from Mark Byrne on the goal line following Queensy Menig’s goalbound effort denying Latics the three points.
Craig Davies and Anthony Gerrard look set to stay in the matchday squad after the pair returned from injury on Wednesday night. Cameron Dummigan (groin) and Kean Bryan (hamstring) remain unavailable for selection.
Reflecting on a hard-earned point in midweek, the gaffer reiterated the importance of picking up points between now and the end of the season: “When you get to this stage of the season and you’re so close to where you want to be, every point is obviously a good point.
“However, when you’re at home and with the way the game worked out in the second half, you obviously want to take one of the chances that comes along but you have to say fair play to their goalkeeper, he played really well and pulled off a few good saves.”
On tomorrow’s opponents, Wellens commented: “At the minute, they’re an up and down team. They were 4-0 down at half-time against Southend and then they go and get a point against Blackburn on Tuesday, who have won a lot of games on the bounce.
“Tom Eaves is a player this club knows well. He’s a threat and a good target man. Lee Martin’s out with suspension. He’s obviously one of their main players.
“He’s their captain and a good footballer but it’s like anything in this league, if we do the basics right and take our chances then we’ll be okay.”
