Gardner Thriving Under Extra Responsibility

10 August 2018

Midfielder Dan Gardner believes deputising as captain for Peter Clarke has made him up his game.

Gardner lead the team out on the opening day and he feels the responsibility will also help him on a personal level.

“It's good, it feels like it's more on me to get the team going and I think it helps the way I play because I know I've got to be on my game all the time, so I think it’s going to help me improve my game.” Gardner said.

Ahead of the game this weekend with Forest Green Rovers, Gardner expects a tough test from his own personal experiences with Saturday’s hosts.

“I've known them for quite a few years, I've played against them when I was in the conference with Halifax Town and they're a decent team and it's going to be another hard game like every game in this league, but we'll go there looking to get the win.”

Gardner faced Forest Green during his time with Halifax between 2012 to 2014 so drawing upon them experiences could be vital ahead of the fixture.

He also had some positive words for the Oldham fans, with over 1,000 supporters expected to make the six hour round trip on Saturday.

“To be fair all through last season the away support was second to none, even the last game of the season against Northampton they were singing all the way through” he said.

“It’s massive to us and hopefully they continue to do that all the way through this season which will stand us in good stead.”

Latics take on Forest Green Rovers at The New Lawn this Saturday, August 11, 2018 (3:00pm kick off).
