Match report for Forest Green Rovers vs Oldham Athletic on 11 Aug 18

11 August 2018

Dan Gardner scored from the penalty spot to earn Oldham Athletic a point away at Forest Green Rovers after Reuben Reid had given the hosts the lead.

The contest started off at a slow pace with both teams trying to get a feel of the game with a mixture of fouls interrupting the flow of the game.

Latics had the games first real chance when they won a freekick on the edge of the box, but Gardner couldn’t hit the target.

Forest Green Rovers took their opening opportunity after a Sam Graham slip was capitalized upon by Reid and his low effort found the bottom corner of the Oldham goal.

Chances came few and far between, however old boy Carl Winchester found some space in and around the Oldham box.

He tried to find the top corner but curled his effort wide and the sides went in at half time with Forest Green one up.

Jose Baxter was introduced at half time and almost immediately got Latics back into the game as he found himself in space in the box, but his cross was saved well by Robert Sanchez.

Daniel Iversen was then called into action as he flew to his left to save brilliantly to deny Reece Brown.

Baxter curled an effort wide before Iversen was there again, this time to beat away Winchesters’ effort.

Iversen versus Winchester was becoming a theme in the game and the big Dane denied the former Oldham man once again superbly.

The ball was crossed low into Winchester but Iversen spread himself, much like another famous Danish goalkeeper, to keep Oldham in the game.

Latics were level ten minutes later as Baxter was brought down by Sanchez with Gardner stepping up and dispatching the penalty.

Forest Green did have the ball in the back of the net, but it was ruled out for offside as Latics managed to hold on for their first point of the season.
