O’Grady “It Was A Reaction”

31 December 2018

Striker Chris O’Grady says the team’s performance against Port Vale on Saturday was a reaction to the Boxing Day defeat to Carlisle United.

Latics ran out 1-4 winners at Vale Park thanks to goals from Callum Lang, Mohamed Maouche, Gevaro Nepomuceno and O’Grady himself who rounded things off.

He believes that the Boxing Day result was a one off which was proved as Latics bounced back to claim the three points on Saturday.

“I suppose it was a reaction really to the other day.” He said.

“The last game didn't represent us, and it was a blip because we've been doing really well.

“It was a shame the circumstances that followed, but today was just about putting it right.”

It was a difficult week for the club, but O’Grady says the team had to remain professional and get on with the job in hand.

He also believes that the side can build on Saturday’s performance going into 2019.

“It was about testing ourselves as professionals and adults that you can't moan about it, we had to get on with it which we did.” He commented.

“We wanted to end the year well and, overall we have done, so we'll be looking to carry it forward.

“We can be pleased with how it's gone so far, and we look forward to the New Year and what we can achieve.”

Pete Wild took charge of the side on Saturday with the squad having less than 24 hours to come to terms with his ideas.

Wild slightly altered the style of play on Saturday with O’Grady having to put it a lot of hard graft up front on his own.

“It was tough and tiring!” He joked.

“We just have to adapt to it, Pete outlined his tactics yesterday and it was for us to implement them as soon as possible which we did.

“We just try to do what he was asking of us and be professional about it which we did, so hopefully he'll be pleased.”

Latics take on Notts County on New Year’s Day looking to make it back-to-back wins and close the gap on the playoff positions.

O’Grady is hoping the side can continue the form they showed on Saturday.

“We'll be more confident looking to build on what we've done today and just looking for the same result really.”
