Wellens Urges Players To Express Themselves

4 January 2018

Oldham Athletic manager Richie Wellens wants his players to express themselves this weekend against Charlton Athletic.

Latics travel to The Valley looking to bounce back from a disappointing result against Shrewsbury Town on Monday.

Ahead of the match, Wellens said: “I’m a very positive person, there have been lots of little things that have gone on which have contributed to the run of results.

“I’ve want to get the players on the training pitch so we can work on more things, but because of the weather we’ve had there’s nothing we can do.

“We’re very close to two maybe three players, we’ve got Patrick McEleney who we’re trying to resister, we’ve just got to be careful with him because he’s not played for six weeks so we’ve got to try and drop him in gently.

“I’m desperate to try and get two strikers in, something maybe close with one, I think we need a little bit more pace in the team, especially up top.

“We’ve had two games in three days so the preparation for this weekend’s game against Charlton Athletic has all been about recovery.

“They’re a big club, today they’ve signed Stephy Mavididi from Arsenal, they can afford him.

“They’ve got a centre half back that they paid £1 million for, they’re a big club with big finances.

“I’ll be telling my players it’s a great place to go and play, express yourselves, playing on a lovely pitch, let’s get back to it, lets get some some intensity into our game the way that we pass the ball about and let’s get a result.”

Oldham Athletic travel take on Charlton Athletic on Saturday, January 7, at The Valley, 3pm kick off.
