MATCH PREVIEW: Shrewsbury Town vs. Oldham Athletic

23 January 2018

Oldham Athletic face Shrewsbury Town in the quarter final of the Checkatrade Trophy this evening (7pm kick off).

Athletic are two games away from a potential trip to Wembley and can move a step closer with a win tonight against Shrewsbury Town.

Latics head into the game buoyed with confidence in the competition after wins away at Bradford City and a win against Leicester City under 21s.

A brace from Craig Davies and further goals from Anthony Gerrard and Tope Obadeyi secured Latics’ passage through to this stage of the competition.

Shrewsbury Town head into the game without a win in five games, however, still sit third in Sky Bet League One.

The sides faced off on New Year's Day as Shrewsbury Town were 1-0 winners.

Shrewsbury had to rely on penalties to beat Blackpool in the last round of the competition.

Speaking ahead of the game, Wellens said:

“They are a very good team hence why they are so high up in the league and they’ve got some threats.

“The two wide players are threats and whether they play either one of their strikers, both of them have scored goals they both work hard and they both lead the line well so it’s going to be a tough game.

“It’s been a long time since this club has had any kind of success, it was the FA Cup in 1993/94 the last time they were at Wembley.

“Success breeds success and it gives people a real belief and if we go on a run and if we can go on to Wembley and win a trophy we can kick on next season and try and be successful.”

Sky Bet have listed Athletic as outsiders for tonight's game at 3/1 whilst the visitors are 11/10.
