Wellens Looking To Build Momentum

28 March 2018

Oldham Athletic manager Richie Wellens is hoping to build momentum going into the final 10 matches of the season.

Latics travel to Wigan Athletic on Good Friday after a short break following the postponement of Saturday’s game against Walsall.

Wellens side also host Blackpool on Monday, April 2, but the quick turnaround doesn’t faze the manager.

“The games on Friday and Monday are just like games on Saturday and Tuesday,” said Wellens.

“People always make a big deal of the Easter weekend but the bigger picture for me is the fact that April is going to be a huge month with all the postponements and international breaks.”

“April will be when this squad kicks in, not necessarily this weekend but it’ll be April when you start to see the squad players playing and we’re going to need them in the coming weeks.”

Despite having a large squad, the manager has decisions to make with a number of injuries.

We’ve got three or four players who are struggling at the moment and they are trying to get fit so two games in such a short space of time isn’t ideal,” he said.

“I’ll have to manage them and there will be a few changes in the team simply because there are injuries.”

Athletic will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing result at home against Portsmouth last time out whilst Friday’s opposition are on a six game unbeaten run in the league and are looking to push for promotion and the title.

“I think Friday will be a good football game,” Wellens said.

“Paul Cook is a tremendous manager at this level and he was successful last season with Portsmouth and then he went to Wigan and carried the momentum on.

“He’s got great tools to work with and there will be no surprises at the way his team plays, they’re a really good team.

“They’ve got players with a mentality of being used to winning every week at this level.

“They’ve got seven or eight players that previously won this league last time they were here and they’ve got players that have played in the Championship so we’re expecting a tough game.”

Oldham Athletic take on Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium on Friday, March 30, 1:00pm kick off.
