MATCH REPORT: Latics Relegated Following Draw At Northampton Town

5 May 2018

Oldham Athletic were relegated from Sky Bet League One following a 2-2 draw against Northampton Town.

All started well for Latics as George Edmundson fired Athletic ahead on the half hour mark, however, the game turned on its head before half time.

Two quick goals from Northampton, one a penalty through Matt Grimes and another from Ash Taylor put the Cobblers ahead before the break.

Tom Hamer equalised 10 minutes into the second half but that was not enough as Rochdale beat Charlton Athletic 1-0 to ensure Athletic were relegated.

It was a quiet opening to the game as neither side created chances in the first 10 minutes of the game.

The home side shaded the early possession as it took Latics a while to get going.

Latics did grow into the game as a corner into the box found Duckens Nazon at the back post but his header looped over.

Athletic won the ball in good areas and created number of opportunities but failed to turn those into chances.

Eoin Doyle elected to pass instead of shoot when presented with an opportunity in the box whilst at the other end, Northampton Town defender Ash Taylor went close from a header from 12 yards.

Latics’ first chance of the game came on 26 minutes as Jack Byrne played in Nazon and he forced a save from Richard O’Donnell from inside the area.

On the half hour mark, Athletic were ahead through Edmundson.

The central defender netted his first goal for the club as he smashed home from 12 yards following a ball into the box.

Latics looked in control but a ball through the middle found Sam Hoskins, Johny Placide could not save and Tom Hamer brought down the striker inside the box.

The referee pointed to the spot and Grimes stepped up and smashed into the top corner to equalise just before the break.

Athletic thought they were back ahead just before half time as Edmundson again met a cross into the box but his effort just looped wide of the goal.

Latics were hit with a blow on the stroke of half time as a corner into the box found Leon Barnett who fired goalwards.

Placide managed to tip the ball onto the post but Taylor followed up and fired past the goalkeeper to put the Cobblers ahead at half time.

Both sides created early chances in the second half as Taylor headed wide from eight yards for the home side whilst Dan Gardner fired past the post from long range.

Latics needed something and they were back level again on 55 minutes through central defender Hamer.

The second year youth scholar met a cross into the box from Byrne and he powerfully headed beyond O’Donnell to equalise for Latics 10 minutes into the second half.

Wellens brought on Craig Davies to bolster the attack as news broke that Rochdale had taken the lead against Charlton Athletic.

Latics attacked and on 65 minutes, Davies met a cross into the box from Wilfried Moimbe but he headed over from six yards.

Gardner limped off injured on 73 minutes whilst two minutes later, Nazon raced at the defence and shot but he fired wide from 18 yards.

Latics were forced into some defending as time started to run out. Grimes took a free kick 30 yards from goal which Placide had to tip over the crossbar.

Athletic threw everything forward in a bid to get something out of the game but the ball would just not fall for them.

Following results elsewhere, Oldham Athletic suffered relegation to Sky Bet League Two.
