TOGETHERNESS and spirit are vital ingredients if a team is to achieve success, and it would appear there’s plenty of both attributes bouncing around the Athletic squad at present.

Today the lads will attempt to stretch their unbeaten league run to six games, so little wonder Dan Gardner and the rest of the squad are high on confidence right now.

“Everyone’s in good spirits,” said hard-working midfielder Gardner, an ever-present in the team so far this term.

“The staff, all the players, we’re all in a good place at the moment.

“We’ve just got to keep on doing what we’re doing – that’s working hard and playing as well as we can in the games.

“We might not have played so well in all of the games, but we’ve still been getting the results so we’ve just got to keep that going as long as we can.

“When you’re winning and getting results, obviously you feel better and train better.

“That makes you play better, and everyone’s up for the game when it comes around.

“All the players get on really well off the pitch too.

“Obviously there’s different people who get on with different people, but we go out for some food now and again together at somewhere like Nando’s or whatever.

“It’s all about trying to build team spirit even more I guess.”

For the rest of Gardner's interview and much more, make sure you pick up a match day programme for this Saturday's fixture at home to Newport County AFC tomorrow, Saturday, September 8 (3pm kick off).

Programmes only cost £3 and can be purchased from stands around the ground.

Whilst you're here...

The EFL annual general meeting, which took place over the summer, saw clubs vote to remove the obligation to print a programme at every home game.

Despite this change in the league rules, Latics will continue to produce a 64-page programme for every home league game and a reduced edition for cup matches - but it needs your backing.

While our club partners continue to support us, and fans still buy the programme in sufficient numbers, we will continue to produce a programme for the foreseeable future.
