Banide's Honest Assessment On Crewe Performance

11 August 2019

The Head Coach understands work has to be done after seeing his side lose their opening home league game of the season.

Crewe Alexandra were the visitors at the weekend and a brace from former Latic Chris Porter was enough to come back and record their first points of the season.

Banide said; "The performance is not enough. We lost against a good team, with better technique and physique, so we must accept and if we want to exist in this league we must push our level because for the moment it's not enough."

Despite starting brightly with Christopher Missilou opening the scoring in the second minute, the Head Coach of Oldham Athletic knew his side didn't do enough after it.

"We have some chances but it's not enough. It's about how we play inside, the continuity of the game is not enough and we lost against the better team. So like I tell you, if we want to exist in this league we need to have a better level."

He added; "For the moment we must play more, we must have more quality and we lost against the better team than us."

Going in at the break 2-1 down, two changes were made at half-time with Desire Segbe Azankpo and Gevaro Nepomuceno coming on to try and have a more attacking edge.

"When you're losing you need to change and we saw Desire make a good entrance and Gevaro tried. But we need to have more personality, more character, more spirit.

"When you lose a duel, when you lose a 1v1 it's difficult. It's important to have more capacity to win the 1v1 and for passing and dribbling and for creating something. And for the moment we don't have that."

One positive from the encounter was the performance of Woods in the Oldham goal, who pulled off a number of good saves to keep Latics in the game.

"Gary Woods is a very good player and I'm sad for him because he works a lot and I think the players must help him more.

"So we have Gary who works well and we're very happy about this goalkeeper but for the moment we have to look at the rest of the team, not everybody, but it's not enough."

Also, a notable absence from the line-up was the recent addition of David Wheater. An update was given by Banide on the defender.

"David for the moment is injured, so we don't take a risk. He's very important in the team for the character, for the spirit but we cannot take risks with a player like that.

"So we try with others. It's football, we must change when the player is not 100%, it's normal. We cannot take a risk and we never take a risk."
