Nepomuceno: "We Have Enough Quality"

16 August 2019

Oldham Athletic travel to the Northern Commercials Stadium tomorrow to face Bradford City and winger Gevaro Nepomuceno previews the game.

The winger was disappointed not to have won against Blackburn Rovers during the week after conceding two late goals but claims the lads must learn from their mistakes.

“I think that we started well as a team as we ran and fought for each other and that is what we need this season because we have enough quality within the team." He said.

“Of course everyone is disappointed because we lost within the last minutes of the game, this is something that we need to learn from and improve on Saturday.”

He was also happy to have netted his first goal of the season this week but aims to improve from last season.

“I’m happy to have scored and be there for the team, I always aim to be there for the team and become a better player.” He commented.

“I don’t have a target in terms of goals, I try to perform better than last season and I just want to do my best for the team.

"If we win then I’m happy.”

Nepomuceno arrived back to pre-season late because he represented Curacao in the CONCACAF Gold Cup during the summer.

He's not had long to rest and recouperate which is why Head Coach Laurent Banide has eased him back into things.

“I had a long summer playing in two tournaments, it was difficult when I came back and now I feel that I’m getting back into shape again.

“I will keep working and training and hope I get some minutes.”

Nepomuceno is now entering his third season with the club and he says that he enjoys playing for Latics and is happy to have become a regular in the starting XI last season.

“I am enjoying my football here, last season I got the most minutes on the pitch in my whole career and any player would be happy with that.”

The winger has been impressed by his new Head Coach and claims that he needs time to build his squad.

“He’s a good coach, and he puts on great training sessions, he explains to each player what they can do better or how he wants us to play.

“It’s going to take time, you can never build a house in one or two days, we’re in a good way and I hope that we can keep going and have a good season.”

Nepomuceno took plenty of positives from the game against Blackburn Rovers but also believes Latics have been unlucky so far this season.

“I think that for sure we have got to get something because if you have seen how we played in mid-week and how the Head Coach wanted us to play and how he wanted us to be in a shape and now the players know exactly what they need to do on the pitch.

“The first two games we were a little bit unlucky but I have a lot of trust in the team.”

The 26-year-old has been with Latics since 2017 and has made the most appearances for the club in the current squad.

“I’m happy to have made a lot of appearances for the club because I like the club and I like everybody that works here.

“It doesn’t matter if I am playing or not, I’m always happy with the people around the club, of course, every player wants to play but sometimes it doesn’t happen.”

Nepomuceno claims that the support from Latics fans is outstanding and wants to put on a good performance against Bradford City for the supporters.

“This is my third season with the club, and the support at away games is brilliant, it doesn’t matter if it’s five or six hours away, they are always there.

“I think that we need to put on a good performance on Saturday and give them the confidence to keep coming.”
