Banide: "It Was Important To Win"

25 August 2019

After securing his first victory in the league, the Latics Head Coach shared his thoughts at full-time.

Goals from Urko Vera and David Wheater in each half meant Banide's side not only got their first three points but beat a team who were unbeaten in five.

"I’m very happy and I’m very happy for the players because it’s a very good result. Cambridge United are a very good team, it was important to win and it’s good for everyone and we will continue to work."

He added: "We worked well. David (Wheater) and Gary (Woods) helped the team too and today Maouche helped the team a lot because he kept the ball and Urko (Vera) made a good difference.

"We have young players but they work well and they improve with time, game after game they improve and we need to continue. It was a very important match."

The game at the Abbey Stadium saw David Wheater grab his first goal in an Oldham shirt, heading in from a corner midway through the second-half to put Latics back in front. And Banide knows how important he is to the team moving forwards.

"He was the right person at the right time. David (Wheater) won a lot of headers and it’s amazing because every time the ball arrives he wins it in the defensive zone and every time he has a good position, so it’s good and needs to continue.”

Now the Head Coach has a full week to prepare for the next competitive fixture for the first time this season and knows it's important to build on this confidence boosting victory.

"When you have a good result you need to continue and work more because it’s important to look for more quality and we can improve, we have a lot potential to improve and we need to concentrate.

"It’s okay that we won, it’s very important but forget and prepare for the next game with the same quality because each game is another story."

"I’m very happy maybe because the sun is here and we took three points but we played against a great team with great players. It was very difficult but that’s football."
