Latics take on Salford City tomorrow looking to make it three wins on the bounce after 2-1 victories against Crawley Town and Morecambe (3pm KO).
Oldham will also be looking to make it five without defeat at Boundary Park in the league when the Ammies come to town for the local tie.
Form Guide
Latics’ Boxing Day win extended their good run of form in Sky Bet League Two meaning that they have now lost just once in eight matches, a run that lifted Maamria's side to 17th in the table - the highest the club has been so far this campaign.
On the other hand, Salford’s impressive win over high-flying Crewe was their first league win since November 2nd when they beat Newport County.
Ammies’ last six:
- Salford City 0-0 Macclesfield Town
- Salford City 3-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers u21s (EFL Trophy)
- Colchester United 1-0 Salford City
- Salford City 0-1 Exeter City
- Bradford City 1-1 Salford City
- Salford City 3-1 Crewe Alexandra
Head-to-Head
This will be the first time that Latics have faced Salford City in a competitive game of football after the Ammies' well documented rise through the non-league pyramid after the takeover by the 'Class of 92'.
League Story So Far
The Ammies have had a steady start to their first ever Football League campaign and as a result sit 11th in the table.
City got off to a great start to the season beating Stevenage 2-0 in front of the Sky Sports cameras but then went seven without a league win.
Since that, Salford have begun to find their feet at this level but any people who thought that they would find life just as easy as their astronomic rise through non-league have been mistaken.
The Ammies are six places better off than Oldham but victory could see Latics overtake them in the table on goal difference.
What We Said
Dino Maamria after his sides 2-1 win at Morecambe: "The best way is to try and keep that cohesion in the team. They know each other pretty well now as we've been playing a certain way for a while.
"We've been doing a lot of work especially on going forward as we know we're lacking goals and need to score more.
"It is showing as I'm not someone who is big on changing the team all the time. I give players chances, I make sure they are allowed to have bad a game every now and then. The best way to reward them is to give them the shirt to make sure they are putting in a good performance.
"Having said that we've got a couple of games now very close together so we've got to make sure that I get some freshness in the team."
Watch Out For
Richie Towell – the Dublin born midfielder has made a good start to life at the Peninsula Stadium since joining in the summer.
Towell started his career at Scottish champions Celtic but struggled to find game time so ended up at loan at Hibernian before leaving for Dundalk on a permanent deal.
After winning back-to-back league titles and enjoying Champions League action with Dundalk, Towell won a deal to join Brighton and Hove Albion.
Despite struggling to make an impact at the AMEX, Towell has experience levels above League Two with Rotherham United who he spent two years on loan with. He assisted them to win promotion to the Sky Bet Championship in his first season with the Millers.
His second did not have the same success as his four goals in 34 appearances weren’t enough to help them avoid the drop back down to the third tier of English football.
On 31st May 2019 Towell joined Salford City and to date has made 19 appearances and scored 4 goals in all competitions.
Familiar Faces
Adam Rooney - the current Salford striker has had playing stints at both Latics and the Ammies.
The also Dublin born attacker arrived at Boundary Park in 2013, where he scored four league goals for Oldham before moving north of the border to join Aberdeen in January 2014.
Rooney had a good scoring record at Pittodrie but in July 2018 made the surpise move to National League side Salford City. It was a move that shocked football and unsurprisingly Rooney’s goals have helped the Ammies secure promotion to the Football League for the first time in the club’s history.
Paul Scholes – still a co-owner of Salford City and Manchester United legend Paul Scholes had a brief spell as manager at Boundary Park last season.
Scholes was part of the 'Class of 92' along with Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and Phil Neville who bought Salford City ahead of the 2014-15 season. They have had unimaginable success since and have big ambitions for their local club where they used to train nearby.
The 45-year-old was manager of his boyhood supported club for only 31 days during the last campaign, his reign started in style with Latics defeating Yeovil Town 4-1 at Boundary Park but that would be Scholes’ first and last win as manager of Oldham Athletic.
In The Dugout
In the visiting dugout at Boundary Park will be Graham Alexander.
Alexander started his managerial career with Fleetwood Town and had early success, guiding them to the third tier of English football in his second season in charge but was dismissed in September 2015 following a poor start to the season.
The 48-year-old then took over at Scunthorpe United and in his first full season with the club guided them to the Sky Bet League One play-offs but suffered defeat to Millwall in the semi-finals.
His next job was to take over from the popular duo Bernard Morley and Anthony Johnson at Moor Lane. In his first season Salford were promoted via the play-offs taking the club to the highest level that they have ever played at.
