Hamer Delighted With New Deal

18 July 2019

Tom Hamer is delighted to have put pen-to-paper on a new two-year deal with Latics until 2022.

The academy product says he is happy to get the deal over the line, with swift talks during the summer to improve his original deal that would have finished at the end of this season.

“I’m delighted to have signed a new contract, it’s a club where I’ve been for pretty much all my career as a professional and through the youth academy.” He said.

“I’m buzzing to have got it all sorted out and finally signed.”

The 19-year-old believes that signing a new contract at Latics was the right choice for him to progress as a footballer.

“I didn’t really have to think about it, I’ve played a lot of games and at my age that’s a good thing to have done, early in my career.” He commented.

“I played 35 games last season and as a nineteen-year-old that’s the best thing that you can be doing in first team football. I was an easy decision.”

Hamer has enjoyed the pre-season so far meeting all the new signings and Head Coach Laurent Banide.

He also shares a special bond with the other academy products such as Jamie Stott, Harry Robinson and Javid Swaby-Neavin due to their similar backgrounds.

“I know a few of the lads that have also come through the academy as well, so I’m good friends with them.

“I’ve gotten on with the new lads that have come in, we’ve been to Morocco and got to know them, so it’s a good thing to be staying.”

The young defender says the squad have their targets for the upcoming season, but he also has personal goals he wants to hit.

“Last season didn’t go how we want, that’s why we’re going to push for promotion this year, but my target is to get as many games as I can and maybe some more assists and goals.

Hamer wants to gain as much experience as possible and he believes playing games will boost his confidence and quality as a footballer.

“I think that the more games that I play the more experience I’ll get and the better I’ll become as a footballer which is the main thing.

“I’ll try and get as many games as I can which will boost my confidence up on and off the pitch and see where it goes from there.”
