MATCH REPORT: Latics Lose Out To Rochdale In The Ernie Cooksey Trophy

20 July 2019

Rochdale scored a late winner to get their hands on the Ernie Cooksey Trophy as Oldham Athletic fell to a 2-3 defeat.

The visitors went ahead just seven minutes into the game, Calvin Andrew ran down the left-wing before crossing it in front of the Latics goal and Matty Done tapped it into an empty net.

Dale doubled their lead shortly after neat football from the visitors and Jimmy Keohane’s strike found the bottom corner from outside the box.

Latics put press on Dale following the goals, and Zak Mills whipped a danger cross into the box and nearly caused a defender to put it into his own net.

Latics pulled a goal back as Alex Iacovitti crossed the ball into the box and Urko Vera nodded it down to Mohamed Maouche who volleyed it home.

Latics equalised in the 31st minute when Mohamed Maouche’s freekick found Jamie Scott at the back post and he headed it across the goal to Tom Hamer and he tapped it in.

In the 58th minute, Scott Wilson and Zak Mills linked up well before the right-back tried his luck from outside the box but was denied by Josh Lillis.

Dale had the chance to regain the lead when Gregor Zabret rushed outside the box and headed it straight to Callum Camps, but the midfielder’s strike went wide of the goal.

Rochdale scored the winner in the 83rd minute after Rekeil Pyke played the ball across the box and it fell to Ian Henderson who found the back of the net (2-3).

Latics were close to equalising in the last minute from a corner, Alex Iacovitti had a powerful header saved by Josh Lillis.
