Wild On Tough Newport Test

1 May 2019

Head Coach Pete Wild was once again disappointed with the second-half performance away from home.

Visiting an in-form team who have made Rodney Parade a fortress, Wild knew it was going to be a big test for his side.

"It it was always going to be tough coming here, I thought we worked hard in the first-half again, but to get an injury to our skipper and probably one of our most influential players across the season was also tough."

He added: "But I thought the young lads who came in and stood in the back done well. And then we pick up an injury just into the second-half to George.

"Let's be honest, the ball is 30 yards away and the referee should blow and let us sort George out but for some weird reason he lets play carry on and they score from it. It's a really disappointing decision that and probably had an effect on the game."

The tough task ahead got even tougher for Oldham on the night after two forced changes due to the injuries to the formidable centre-back pairing of Peter Clarke and George Edmundson either side of half-time.

"They are two of our most influential players across the season so it's so unfortunate for it to happen to us. But Alex (Iacovitti) and Tom (Hamer) and Hunty (Hunt) and G (Nepomuceno) when they dropped into the back four, I thought they'd done really well so fair play to them.

"But when you come here you've got to play the conditions, you've got to play the pitch and you've got to play them.

"And I thought second-half we didn't play the pitch, we didn't play them the way we should have done and we went too short and tried to play too tippy-tappy when we should've really just kept doing what we're good at first-half and dropping the ball down the sides."

Back-to-back defeats on the road recently with two similar performances in terms of a difference between first and second half performances, Wild knows it's something to think about before the weekend.

"When you give them information at half-time you want them to go out and express themselves off the information you give them.

"But unfortunately we didn't do that again so that's something me and Chris need to have a think about and have a look at come Saturday.

"I thought we were professional in the way we went about our business but I don't think we were cute enough in our play and we just didn't play the conditions second-half unfortunately."

With two serious injuries, an update on Clarke and Edmundson was given shortly after full-time at Rodney Parade, with the Club Captain up and walking about which was a good sign.

"Clarke went off in a neck-brace which isn't good. The Doctor was concerned about him but we all know Peter and if he can get up, he'll get up and he did, and seemed to be ok after the challenge so we're really pleased about that.

"George has got an injury to the calf which didn't look great again. Them two they're not coming off unless they're really injured so to lose both of them in one game is really tough."

Latics now finish the campaign on Saturday at Boundary Park and it's simple what the focus will be over the coming days.

"We've got to pick them up and drive them forward and try and get a positive result on Saturday and make sure we finish the season with some confidence."
