The 12th Episode of 'A Trip Down Sheepfoot Lane' Is Out Now!

8 August 2020

This week on 'A Trip Down Sheepfoot Lane', Roy Butterworth is joined by former Latics midfielder Les Chapman, who played for the club during the 60's and 70's.

Born in the local area, Chapman grew up in Royton playing for Chadderton Boys before making his professional debut for his hometown club as an 18-year-old in 1967 against Bristol Rovers. Overall, the midfielder had two spells with the club after leaving to join Huddersfield Town in 1969 but returned five-years later.

'Chappy' arrived back at Boundary Park and helped guide Latics back up to the Second Division alongside greats such as Ian Wood and Alan Groves. The 71-year-old appeared 263 times across both stints, scoring 20 goals.

Impressively, he has notched up over 750 appearances across a 21-year career and also played for the likes of Bradford City, Stockport County and Preston North End. To add to this, he enjoyed a short spell in America at the San Jose Earthquakes in 1978.

His step into management meant he took charge of Stockport and Preston before becoming the famous kitman at Manchester City for 17 years.

We'd like to thank Les for giving his time up to talk about his early Latics memories.
