'Miles for Heroes' Shirt Auction

6 November 2020

Sponsored by

For this weekend's Emirates FA Cup fixture against Hampton & Richmond Borough, Latics players will wear commemorative shirts in remembrance of those who sacrificed their life on the frontline.

Next week, selected match worn shirts from the fixture will be available to purchase through a silent auction process, led by Oldham Athletic Community Trust. All proceeds will be donated to Adam Phillips, an Oldham Athletic Military Veterans participant, as he embarks this weekend on a gruelling fundraising event.

Adam and his friend Shaun will be raising money for the Royal British Legion, completing a walk for heroes.

Starting at 11am tomorrow (Saturday 7 November 2020) Adam Phillips (Ex-Royal Engineer) and fellow veteran Shaun Schofield (Ex-Cheshire Regiment) are walking continually for 24 hours with the aim of visiting every borough cenotaph/war memorial in the Greater Manchester area.

Starting from Shaw & Crompton Royal British Legion branch, they will start walking to the war memorial opposite the town hall in Oldham. From Oldham they will be walking to the following cenotaphs and war memorials; Rochdale, Bury, Bolton, Wigan, Salford, Trafford, Stockport, Tameside paying their respects along the way, with the aim of finishing at St Peters Square in Manchester at 11am on Sunday 8 November 2020 ready to salute at the Cenotaph. The aim will be to complete a minimum of 75 miles in remembrance of this year being the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Adam said; "Being a veteran means you never stop caring about your friends you served with. In good times and bad the link between veterans is unbreakable. Walking for 24 hours is going to be hard but it doesn't compare to the sacrifices made by all service men and women past and present.

"We hope we can physically push ourselves for the full 24 hours and increase the distance to closer to 100 miles by taking some detours along the way visiting some of the smaller memorials if we can."

More information will be available on Monday on how you can place your bid for the selected match worn shirts.
