MATCH PREVIEW: Morecambe vs. Latics

15 September 2020

Harry Kewell’s side travel to Morecambe in search of a place in the third round of the Carabao Cup (7:45pm KO).

If Latics should win at the Globe Arena, they would host either Newcastle United or Blackburn Rovers at Boundary Park in the next round of the competition.

If tonight's match is all square at the end of the 90 minutes then the game will go straight to a penalty shootout.

The hosts go into the game on the back of an impressive 2-1 win over Cheltenham Town with Carlos Mendes Gomes ensuring maximum points with his winning goal in the 92nd minute.

On the other hand, Oldham will be looking to bounce back quickly from an opening day defeat in Sky Bet League Two at the hands of Leyton Orient.

Head-to-Head

Latics have won three of the five games to have been played between these two clubs, this includes last season when Oldham did the double over the Shrimps.

At Boundary Park, goals from Mohammed Maouche, Desire Segbe-Azankpo and Jonny Smith secured a 3-1 one.

Whilst in the reverse fixture, Segbe-Azankpo and Mohamad Sylla struck to ensure three points in the boxing day clash.

Cup Runs

The Shrimps made it into the Second Round of the Carabao Cup after beating fellow League Two side Grimsby on penalties.

The score was 1-1 after 90 minutes with Adam Phillips on the scoresheet for Morecambe before it was decided from the spot with John O’Sullivan hitting home the winning penalty.

Latics had a more convincing route to round two, beating Carlisle United by three goals to nil.

Watch Out For

The player on loan from Burnley, Adam Phillips has enjoyed a strong start to the season, netting two goals already this campaign.

He scored against Grimsby in the Carabao Cup and then put his side level from the spot against Cheltenham Town in Sky Bet League Two.

This is Phillips’ second loan with the Shrimps. He initially arrived at the Globe Arena on loan from Burnley in January 2020 and he had an impressive impact before the season was finished early.

In his 11 league games with the club, he has chipped in with four goals and three assists.

Phillips will be hoping to carry that impressive form into 2020/21.

In The Dugout

In the home dugout is Derek Adams.

Adams took over the reins at the Globe Arena in November 2019 after the long-serving Jim Bentley departed the club for AFC Fylde.

He has also managed Ross County and Plymouth Argyle. At just 33 years-old, Adams did the impressive feat of leading Ross County to the Scottish Cup Final beating Celtic and Hibernian on the way.
