Sutton United are also still looking for their first win of the season.

Out of the three league games that they have played so far, they have drawn twice.

They held Salford City to a goalless draw at the Peninsula Stadium before an 84th minute leveller from Donovan Wilson saw them snatch a point at home to Scunthorpe United.

United finished the previous season in good nick, winning seven of their last 10 games.

This impressive win saw them claim a historic promotion into the Football League for the first time in the club’s history.

Head-to-Head

This will be the first time that Latics have faced Sutton United in a competitive fixture.

Stadium

Sutton play their home games at Gander Green Lane.

It will be a historic day for the club as they have their first EFL game in front of their own supporters. The delay in hosting this opener was down to the change of an artifical surface to a grass pitch over the summer after their promotion.

Capacity: 7,032

Record attendance: 14,000 (v Leeds United, FA Cup fourth round 1969/70)

Opened: 1912

The ground also plays host to Sutton Common Rovers as well as AFC Wimbledon Ladies.

Watch Out For

Donovan Wilson has two goals to his name already this season.

The 24-year-old forward’s goal against Scunthorpe earned his side a point and he was also on target against Sky Bet Championship side Cardiff City in their 3-2 defeat.

Wilson was a contributing factor that helped lift Sutton into the Football League.

Joining fairly late on in the season during March, Wilson scored seven and assisted one in 16 games for the Yellows.

Unsurprisingly, Sutton were keen to make the move a permanent one and the deal went through in June.

The pacey forward began his career with Bristol Rovers and has also had spells with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Port Vale, Jumilla, Exeter City, Burgos, Macclesfield Town and Bath City before he joined his current club.

In The Dugout

Matt Gray is the man in the dugout for the hosts.

As a player Gray spent time with Barnet, Hayes and Havant & Waterlooville.

He has had coaching experience with Eastleigh, Aldershot Town and Crawley Town before getting his first crack at management with Sutton United.

Gray was appointed boss on an interim basis at first but was awarded with the permanent posting in May 2019.

The gaffer led Sutton to the Football League for the first time in the club’s history last season and he was awarded the Manager of the Year award in the process.

A Foot In Both Camps

The current U's man between the sticks is ex-Latics 'keeper Dean Bouzanis.

Dean Bouzanis.jpg

A spell at Boundary Park between 2011-13 for the Australian was a memorable one partly down to the FA Cup giant-killing against Liverpool and his involvement in the last minute goal with Everton towards the end of his time at the club.

After a host of other teams he returned to England and joined the South London side in August 2020 as his partner moved across to play for Arsenal. An ever present figure, he was key to their promotion keeping 18 clean sheets last season and has been handed the gloves again providing experience in their debut Sky Bet League Two campaign.

Match Officials

The man in the middle is Darren Drysdale.

Darren Drysdale.jpg

His last fixture in charge of Latics arrived in March 2021 as we lost 2-1 away at Leyton Orient and he handed out four yellow cards.

He took charge of 27 games last campaign, handing out a total of 78 yellow cards and two red cards.

Drysdale will be assisted by Stuart Butler and Samuel Ogles, with Nicholas Cooper the Fourth Official.

Sky Bet Odds

The hosts are the bookmaker’s favourites to take maximum points and are priced at 23/20 to get the win.

Latics are 21/10 to get their Sky Bet League Two season up and running whilst 12/5 is available for the draw.

Ticket & Travel Information

Due to the tight timescales, tickets will not be posted out and will only be available for collection from either Boundary Park during the week or Sutton's ground on the day of the game between turnstiles 9 & 10 at the Collingwood Road entrance a couple of hours ahead of kick-off.

The hosts have also informed us that they are encouraging fans who are travelling by train to use Sutton station and not West Sutton.

This is because West Sutton which is directly outside of the ground is closed due to engineering works this weekend.

The easiest way from Euston is to go to Victoria and then get the Southern services to Sutton or the Northern line to Morden.

The number 80 bus from Mordon or Sutton then goes past the Recreation Ground close to the away entrance.
