Latics vs. Leeds United U21

Papa John's Trophy - Group B - Game Two

28 September 2021

Latics turn their attention away from Sky Bet League Two to the Papa John’s Trophy as they welcome Leeds United's U21 to Boundary Park (7pm KO).

Last time out, there was derby day delight for Keith Curle’s men as a special Davis Keillor-Dunn goal was enough to secure a much-needed three points at Rochdale.

Form Guide

Leeds’ young side have won three of their opening six matches.

Wins came against Crystal Palace (3-1), Derby County (3-2) and Liverpool, who were put to the sword in a 4-0 drubbing before a thrilling 4-4 draw with Blackburn last time out.

This leaves them fourth in the Premier League 2 table.

However, they lost their opening EFL Trophy game against Tranmere Rovers.

Papa John’s Trophy So Far

Latics have played one game in the competition so far, where they faced up against fellow Sky Bet League Two outfit Salford City.

A first half goal from ex-Ammie Carl Piergianni won Oldham all three points, putting them in a good position to get out of their group and into the knockout stages.

Curle and co will be hoping to get a firmer grip on qualification against Leeds.

The young Whites did not have as successful of a start to their campaign and found themselves on the wrong side of a 4-1 defeat to Tranmere Rovers, with Amari Miller on the scoresheet for them.

All matches have to have a winner on the night, with a penalty shoot-out deciding who is awarded an extra point should the 90 minutes end in a draw.

Head-to-Head

This fixture may be against the youth side but Latics have gone up against Leeds United on many occasions.

Meetings: 48

Latics wins: 15
Leeds United wins: 20
Draws: 13

Latics last beat Leeds on the 16 August 2008.

A second-half double from Chris Taylor shocked Elland Road and led Latics to three points in the League One fixture.

United have won each of the last three encounters all by the scoreline of 2-0.

In The Dugout

Mark Jackson is the man in the dugout for the visitors.

Jackson has been the Head Coach of Leeds United U23 since September 2020 following a promotion from the under-18 setup.

Tonight will see him take charge of a younger than usual group but still packed with promising talent.

He has had a successful start and led them to promotion from Premier League 2 Division 2 last term, impressively not losing a single game at home all season.

The 43-year-old was born in Leeds and began his playing career with the club before going on to represent Huddersfield Town, Barnsley, Scunthorpe United, Kidderminster Harriers, Rochdale and Farsley Celtic.

He was also capped four times by England at under-20 level.

Match Officials

The man in the middle for the game is Andrew Kitchen.

Kitchen has never officiated a Latics game prior to this match after being promoted from the National League list.

He's taken charge of six games, so far, this campaign, handing out a total of 17 yellow cards and one red card.

Kitchen will be assisted by Paul Newhouse and Ivan Stankovic, with Anthony Moore the Fourth Official.

Sky Bet Odds

Latics are favourites to make it two wins from two in the competition and are currently at evens to do so.

The visitors are at 2/1 to get off and running whilst 5/2 is the price for the game to have to be decided via a penalty shootout if the scores are level after 90 minutes.
