Latics 3-2 Torquay

11 December 2022

Latics ended a 7-game winless streak thanks to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Torquay United.

Oldham went a goal ahead after just ten minutes, Alex Reid looked for Ben Tollitt with his cross, just for Dylan Crowe to turn the ball into his own goal.

Will Goodwin equalised early in the second-half with a nice finish, before Latics made a double substitution, with Mike Fondop and Timmy Abraham coming on for Hallam Hope and Alex Reid.

Ben Tollitt, who signed a new deal on Friday, scored a beautiful goal from outside the box to give Latics the lead again.

Torquay equalised minutes later through a penalty, but Abraham secured the three points with a dinked finish from inside the box.

The game started brilliantly for Latics, and they were rewarded when Crowe turned the ball into his own goal from Reid’s cross.

Unsworth’s team looked for a second, and Reid, making his home debut, was denied by Halstead from inside the box.

Rooney also looked for a goal, he turned on the edge of the area and looked to find the far corner, but he couldn’t convert.

The best chance of the game up to that point came just before the conclusion of the first-half, Tollitt gave the ball to Rooney who immediately played through Reid, but Halstead closed him down.

Torquay’s top scorer, Will Goodwin, equalised for The Gulls with a nice finish on the edge of the box.

Unsworth responded by bringing on Fondop and Abraham in place of Hope and Reid, and just five minutes later, Latics were ahead again.

Tollitt picked up the ball in space, and curled a fantastic shot into the far corner, giving the ‘keeper no chance.

Torquay won a penalty immediately from kick-off, as Goodwin was brought down in the box, and Aaron Jarvis brought the visitors level once again.

Latics weren’t downhearted though, and kept looking to retake the lead as substitute Abraham battled with two men to advance into the box and get a shot away.

Abraham’s moment came with 15 minutes left of the clock, Fondop flicked Tollitt’s pass to Abraham inside the box, whose dinked shot found the net via the post.

Torquay threw another striker on in Corie Andrews, as they looked to equalise for a third time.

Despite their best efforts, including a series of corners towards the end of the match, Latics held firm, and saw out the game to win the three points.
