Notts County vs. Latics

26 December 2022

Latics travel to Meadow Lane to take on Notts County in a boxing day clash.

David Unsworth will be hoping that his side can make it back to back league victories following the 3-2 success over Torquay United.

The Opposition

Notts County are in their fifth season in the National League following their relegation from League Two in 2019.

They have finished in the playoffs spots every season since relegation but are yet to make it back into the football league.

The club can boast to be one of the oldest clubs in the English game and has an FA Cup trophy to its name, with success coming in 1894.

Form guide

Latics know that they have a tough game coming due to the impressive run of form that County are enjoying at present.

Unbeaten in 14 league games but with the vast majority of games in that sequence being wins, they have also progressed in the FA Trophy whilst suffering defeat against lower league opposition in the FA Cup.

As a result, they currently top the National League table, four points ahead of Wrexham although the Welsh outfit do have a game in hand.

The Magpies’ last six

Notts County 2-0 Gateshead

Meetings: 94

Latics wins: 36

Notts County wins: 36

Draws: 22

The last time that the two sides came up against each other was back in January 2019.

Goals from Tom Hamer and Peter Clarke saw Latics claim a 2-0 victory at Boundary Park.

Latics are unbeaten in the last six meetings against the Magpies, last losing against them in October 2013.

Watch out for

The most lethal forward in the division this season has been Macaulay Langstaff with a staggering 21 goals to his name already.

A summer signing from Gateshead, Langstaff has made a fantastic start to life at Meadow Lane.

He played a huge part in the Tynesiders’ claiming promotion by winning the National League North last season, scoring 28 goals in the process.

He will be hoping to carry on his impressive form and lift County to promotion to the Football League.

Boro should sign the National League Erling Haaland - and possible next Jamie Vardy

In the dugout

Luke Williams is the man in the dugout for the hosts.

14th of June 2022 saw Williams take the top job at County and he has had a great impact on proceedings with the club sat firmly on top of the table.

He has had various other jobs in football such as assistant at Swansea City and MK Dons as well as managing Brighton and Bristol City’s under 21 sides and Swindon Town’s first team on both permanent and interim basis.

The odds

Perhaps unsurprisingly given their form, the bookmakers make County heavy favourites for the boxing day clash.

Sky Bet have the hosts at 2/9 with Latics out at 19/2 to make it two league wins in a row.

9/2 is the price for the draw.
