Notts County 4-1 Latics

26 December 2022

Latics fell to defeat on Boxing Day at the hands of league leaders Notts County.

A crazy first ten minutes saw Notts County go 2-1 up, following Joe Nuttall’s equaliser.

The game settled down after that, and Latics looked to be going in at half-time down by just a goal, but two quick-fire strikes from Scott and Rodrigues put the hosts three ahead.

Notts continued to control the game, but failed to find the net again, with Oldham being unable to produce much in the second period.

Notts County opened the scoring after just three minutes when Cedwyn Scott got on the end of a cross from deep.

Latics responded just two minutes later though, Nathan Sheron found Joe Nuttall in the box, who slotted the ball past Slocombe with a neat finish.

The league’s top-scorers got their second within ten minutes thanks to Kyle Camera. Matty Palmer’s free-kick was parried to Cameron, who fired the ball into the roof of the net.

After a frantic first ten minutes, the game calmed down, as Oldham looked for a second equaliser, and the home side looked for some stability.

Adam Chicksen on the left-wing was a key threat for Notts, with his crosses and runs troubling the defence.

Notts doubled their lead just before half-time, Norman saved Scott’s shot, but Rodrigues was there to fire home the follow-up.

They weren’t done there though, Rodrigues nodded the ball towards Scott who sliced home his second of the game, leaving Latics three goals behind going into the break.

County continued their dominance of the game in the second period, albeit with a lot less intensity.

They got a number of shots off on goal, with those moves generally coming from Chicksen’s crosses, but lacked that clinical touch they’d shown in the first-half.

Norman denied Scott the chance of a hat-trick at the end, coming off his line with speed to intercept the striker.

Latics will host Notts in the reverse fixture on New Year’s Day.
