Radcliffe 1-2 Latics

27 July 2022

Latics secured a win in their latest pre-season outing with two first-half goals at Radcliffe.

Oldham went a goal up just three minutes in to the game when Trialist A’s free-kick found the head of Chris Porter who headed home, getting his first goal of his second spell at the club.

Trialist A went for goal himself a few minutes later, when he found space on the edge of the box, but Stewart palmed away his effort. He had another chance not long after, he attempted to curl a shot into the top far corner, but it was inches too high.

Radcliffe responded with a chance of their own, Jem Karacan played a good ball through for Thompson, who raced through on goal, but Norman denied him as he tried to place the ball past him.

They had another chance when Rydel fired a ball across the face of goal, Thompson managed to get a touch to it, but only via a stretching leg which saw it go out of play.

Radcliffe got their equaliser just after the half-hour mark - Karacan sent a ball through for Thompson to run on to, and he slotted it past Norman from close-range.

Latics responded, and just a few minutes later, new signing Ben Tollitt fired the ball into the bottom corner following a flurry of chances, giving Oldham the lead.

Former Latic Nicky Adams set up Keyni Mills just before half-time, but he fluffed his shot from a good position.

Oldham went in at half-time a goal to the good.

Porter had another chance from a Jack Stobbs cross shortly after the game restarted, but Stewart managed to catch his header.

A mass-substitution followed that chance, Maynard, Burgess, Fondop, McGahey, Luamba, Vaughan and Trialist C came on for Trialist B, Hogan, Stobbs, Sheron, Hope, Tollitt and Porter.

Trialist A created another chance from a free-kick, this time his ball found Fondop whose header hit the crossbar and went out of play.

Harry Vaughan was up next, he found acres of space down the centre of the Radcliffe pitch and took a shot at goal, but he failed to hit the target as it went wide of the post.

Benny Couto came on for Zaine Francis-Angol, and Vani Da Silva came on for Trialist A, as the game wound down and neither side created many decent chances.

Not long from the final whistle, Da Silva did brilliantly to get past his man on the right and put a ball into the box, but no one was there to tap it in.

Oldham Athletic: Norman, Clarke, Francis-Angol (Couto 67), Hogan (McGahey 51), Stobbs (Burgess 51), Trialist A (Da Silva 77), Porter (Fondop 51), Hope (Luamba 51), Sheron (Maynard 51), Trialist B (Trialist C 51), Tollitt (Vaughan 51).
