Wrexham 3-0 Latics

6 November 2022

Latics exited the Emirates FA Cup after defeat against Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground.

Paul Mullin scored either side of half-time to secure the home side’s progress on what was another hugely disappointing afternoon for Oldham.

Latics’ line-up showed four changes from the previous match at Halifax, including in goal, where Jayson Leutwiler replaced Msgnus Norman.

After a lengthy absence, Hallam Hope also returned to the side, whilst Mark Kitching made his debut after signing in the week.

Wrexham were in the ascendancy from start, Leutwiler collecting a header from Sam Dalby after a cross from Anthony Forde.

David Okagbue was then required to deflect over an angled shot from Mullin following good approach work from Elloitt Lee and the home side then took the lead.

Dalby pounced from close range to put Wrexham in front after Leutwiler was unable to hold an initial shot from Ben Tozer.

Latics tried to respond, Ben Tollitt embarking on a strong run down the left and working himself into a dangerous position but his cross was too close to goalkeeper Mark Howard.

McFazdean then had a shot blocked by Nathan Sheron as Wrexham continued to apply pressure before Mullin added the home side’s second on 26 minutes, cleverly cutting inside before sending the ball past the reach of Leutwiler.

With further chances for Lee and Luke Young, Wrexham remained in command and continued to dictate the flow of the play.

In an attempt to change the course of the game, Latics introduced Mike Fondop at the break in place of Jordan Clarke, also leading to a switch in the shape.

There was an improvement of sorts as Abraham linked with Fondop, whose effort was blocked by McFadzean. Abraham’s header from a Nathan Sheron cross was also held by Mark Howard but there was little else to encourage the travelling support.

Instead, Wrexham reinforced their authority, adding a third when Mullin headed in a long throw from Ben Tozer.

The home side continues to create chances and there was little respite for the visitors.
