Latics 2-0 Yeovil Town

22 October 2022

David Unsworth got his first league win as Latics boss, thanks to goals from Oscar Threlkeld and Mike Fondop.

The opening goal was scored after just five minutes, Zaine Francis-Angol’s cross eventually fell to Oscar Threlkeld who found the net from inside the box.

Latics looked for a second, but couldn’t find one as the first-half faded away.

Conor Carty came on for his debut in place of John Rooney, and played a part in Oldham’s second goal.

He received the ball from Tollitt, before giving it to Fondop who tapped home from 6 yards out.

Magnus Norman denied Yeovil of a consolation goal late on, helping Latics keep their first clean sheet since the opening day against Torquay.

Oldham took the lead early on when Yeovil failed to deal with Francis-Angol’s ball which ended up at Threlkeld’s feet, and his deflected shot beat Smith.

Moments later, John Rooney went for goal on the half-volley, but couldn’t find the target.

Benny Counto came on in place of Dan Gardner who’d suffered an injury at the 20 minute mark, as the first-half went quiet.

Tollitt attempted to recreate his goal from Tuesday against Chester, he cut in on his right, with Grant Smith’s top save denying him.

Conor Carty made his first-team debut 15 minutes into a mostly uneventful second-half, as Tollitt dropped deeper and he partnered Fondop up top.

Lawson D’Ath looked to find an equaliser with a dangerous cross from the left-flank, but a green and white shirt couldn’t get on the end of it.

Unsworth’s lads hit Yeovil on the break through Nathan Sheron, his pass found Tollitt who continued the move, Carty received the ball in a shooting position, but gave the ball to Fondop who tapped home his fifth goal in eight games.

Charlie Cooper replaced Threlkeld as Latics looked to control the remaining 15 minutes of the game.

Carty nearly had a debut goal when he tried to curl a shot in from the edge of the box, but it went inches wide of the post.

Latics: Norman, Clarke, Francis-Angol, Maynard, Gardner (Couto, 19), Sheron, Rooney (Carty, 59), Tollitt, Fondop, Threlkeld (Cooper, 74), Okagbue.

Attendance: 6,483 (144)
