Halifax 2-1 Latics

29 October 2022

There was late frustration for Latics on Saturday night as Halifax claimed the points with a late winner.

Substitute Rob Harker struck with five minutes to go as David Unsworth’s side were undone in the closing stages after battling back into the game.

The visitors would have been worthy of at least a point, Ben Tollitt scoring an equaliser after fine individual skill from debutant Timmy Abraham as Latics fought their way back into the game after conceding midway through the second period.

If anything, it was Oldham, supported by an excellent following of 2,400 travelling fans, who appeared most likely to find the decisive goal after Tollitt had drawn the visitors level, only to pay the price for another lapse at the back.

There had been little in the first half, although Latics started to show more of an attacking influence as the half progressed, with Abraham in particular growing in stature.

The home side were quicker to settle, Luke Summerfield shooting over as space opened up before the lively Kain Spence also went close.

Having started to find their feet, Latics came within inches of opening the scoring on the half hour. Zaine Francis-Angol delivered a delightful cross from the left but Mike Fondop, arriving in a central position, was unable to make contract when in front of goal.

With his direct running and energetic bursts, Abraham also grew into the game, receiving a pass from Jordan Clarke with half-time approaching before rounding goalkeeper Sam Johnson, only for Jesse Deborah to block his angled shot on the goal-line.

Magnus Norman made to make a save from Jamie Cooke at the start of the second period, and although Tollitt was inches away after racing down the left as the game opened up, the hosts took the lead on 62 minutes.

Summerfield delivered a free-kick from the left and Mani Dieseruvwe emerged from the crowd of players to head home.

Although it was Tollitt who equalised 14 minutes later, the goal owed everything to the work of Abraham, who picked up the ball on the left before displaying great skill as he weaved in from the left. With a deft backheel, the attacker then sent the ball into the path of Tollitt, who steered a shot past Johnson.

Yet the lead was short-lived, Harker pouncing after the home side broke down the right as Latics were left to reflect on a frustrating evening.
