Oldham Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of Charlie Wellens on loan from Manchester United.
Charlie, the son of former Latics midfielder and manager Richie Wellens, joins on a deal until 8 January 2023.
The Salford born defender is another young and hungry addition to the squad, and manager John Sheridan thinks he has a great future ahead of him.
“Charlie’s a young player with lots of potential and has received a great schooling at Manchester United in their U18s and U23s," Sheridan said.
“He’s currently on the right path to have a fantastic career and I'm sure he’ll thrive in a first-team environment.
“He’s got pace, he’s versatile and I’m looking forward to seeing him over the coming months for us.”
The 19-year-old has spent the past few years in the Manchester United youth set-up, mainly playing as a right-back.
Wellens started out in central and right midfield for United, as he played the vast majority of the U18s games that season.
He was then converted to a right back as he made his first appearances in Premier League 2 for the U23s, including games against Manchester City and Chelsea.
Last season saw him nail down his place at right-back in the U23s, playing every match bar one in their 26-game campaign - in addition to taking part in three EFL Trophy games.
He was part of the United squad that travelled to Austria for a pre-season training camp and has continued to make appearances in Premier League 2.
Charlie will wear squad number 23. Having received clearance from the National League, the deal is subject to the relevant approval from the Premier League.
A video interview will follow shortly.
