Latics 3-2 Eastleigh

17 September 2022

John Sheridan won his final game as Oldham boss thanks to a last minute winner from Charlie Wellens, on an emotional day at Boundary Park.

The game started brilliantly for Latics, Ben Tollitt broke through the Eastleigh defence and gave the ball to Luke Burgess in the box, who slotted the ball past Joe McDonnell with ease.

Latics continued to control the game, Junior Luamba and Burgess linked up well, with Luamba putting a ball into the box, but the youngster couldn’t find anyone and Eastleigh cleared.

The Spitfires started to create some chances of their own, one coming when Tristan Abrahams headed a neat cross onto the post, letting Latics off.

But their goal came a few moments later, Magnus Norman managed to save the initial shot, but Danny Whitehall pounced on the rebound, and tapped in from close range to level the score just before the half-hour mark.

Tollitt nearly put Latics back in front just seconds after kick-off, he ran onto a superb ball, and was through on goal, but McDonnell made a class save and pushed the ball wide of the post.

Whitehall got his and Eastleigh’s second just before the half-time whistle - Corey Panter’s long throw fell to Whitehall in the box who volleyed home a thunderous shot which left Latics trailing going into the break.

Latics made a triple substitution 10 minutes into the second-half, Harry Vaughan, Mike Fondop and Jack Stobbs came on for Charlie Cooper, Luke Burgess, and Junior Luamba,

Whitehall tried for a third when he got to Panter’s cross, but he could only head his effort wide of the goal.

Latics continued to push for an equaliser, and they got it when Dan Gardner turned deep in the Latics half, and his brilliant cross flew to Fondop in the box, who got a touch to divert it into the net.

The game was mostly all Latics from there on out, as they continued to win corners from blocked crosses, as Stobbs and Tollitt on both wings troubled the Eastleigh full-backs.

Eastleigh nearly scored a carbon copy of their first, JJ McKiernan troubled Norman whose parry fell to Panter, but he could only find the side netting from a few yards out.

As the game came to a close, Eastleigh dug in for a point, but Latics continued to press them, and were rewarded with just two minutes of normal time remaining.

Young Latic, Charlie Wellens received the ball and fired home a beautiful shot from the left of the box, to win the game for Latics.

John Sheridan received a standing ovation from over 6,000 fans inside Boundary Park, as he went over to clap the Latics faithful for the final time as Oldham boss.
