An early Alex Reid goal proved pivotal, as Latics ran out winners against Maidenhead United at Boundary Park.
Oldham took the lead with just over two minutes on the clock, Sheron nodded the ball forward toward Reid, who turned and fired home a powerful shot.
Latics controlled the remainder of the first-half, and went in at the break a goal up.
The visitors did show a brief fight back during the opening minutes of the second-half, but failed to create anything of note.
Substitutes Hope and Gardner caused problems towards the end of the game, but failed to double Latics’ lead.
David Unsworth’s side started the game with attacking intent, and they got their rewards when Sheron headed the ball forward towards Reid, who turned and beat Andre.
Oldham had a superb chance to double their lead after 14 minutes, Hogan’s header was palmed away by the goalkeeper, before Yarney hit the followup against the post from a tight angle.
Sambou, who came into this game with two goals in as many games, had a go just before half-time, with his volley going over the bar.
Latics won a free-kick not long after the start, which was taken by John Rooney. Most inside Boundary Park thought his marvelous effort had sneaked inside the near post, when it had actually hit the side-netting.
Maidenhead had their period of chances, the best of which came when veteran Alan Massey turned inside the box and hit the ball on the volley, failing to find the target.
Gardner and Hope came on in place of Rooney and Sambou with about half an hour to go, and Latics’ continued their attacking intent.
Latics’ Ant & Dec, Mark Kitching and Alex Reid combined for a great chance, Kitch’s great cross found Reid, whose volley was saved by Andrew in between the sticks.
Ellis Chapman came on in place of Reid to shore up the midfield with a handful of minutes remaining.
