Yeovil 0-3 Latics

22 April 2023

Latics won and kept a clean sheet for the fourth consecutive game, as they disposed of already relegated Yeovil Town.

Oldham took the lead after just seven minutes, Devarn Green, scoring his third goal in a Latics shirt, all of which have come away from home, was found at the far post by Mark Kitching, firing home past Grant Smith.

Continuing the attacking intent throughout the first-half and into the second, Mike Fondop poked home Bassala Sambou’s pass, doubling Oldham’s lead.

With stoppage time approaching, Latics were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box, which Fondop took, finding the top corner.

David Unsworth’s side started the game with attacking intent, and created their first chance just forty seconds into the game, Nuttall battled with the Yeovil defence, setting the ball up for Chapman whose shot was deflected

The opening goal came thanks to one of Kitching’s great crosses. Kitch picked out Devarn at the far post, finishing from a tight angle inside the box.

Oldham hit Yeovil with wave after wave of attacks, another Kitching cross was met by Green’s head, but his nod onto Chapman was collected by Smith.

Ex Latic Charlie Cooper had the hosts best chance of the game when he lined-up a free-kick on the edge of the box, but he failed to hit the target, and didn’t trouble Magnus Norman.

Mark Shelton channeled his inner John Rooney and went for goal from the halfway line, as he spotted the ‘keeper off his line. His shot beat the man between the sticks, only to bounce off the crossbar.

David Unsworth made two tactical changes up front on the stroke of the hour mark, Fondop and Sambou came on in place of Reid and Nuttall.

It didn’t take long for both of them to put their stamp on the game, a Latics break saw Sambou run through, switch the ball onto his left foot and give possession to Fondop, who didn’t need to take a touch as he poked it home.

With the game winding down, Athletic remained in control of the game, and won a free-kick in a dangerous position.

As the Yeovil players weren’t paying full attention, Fondop stepped up and curled home a wonderful free-kick, finding the top corner.
